Student Success
Cal Poly Alumna Accepted into International GLOBE Master’s Program
Alexa Cango Ruiz (Environmental Management and Protection, ’25) has been accepted into the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in Global Change Ecology and Biodiversity Management, a competitive two-year international graduate program. Cango Ruiz earned a B.S. in Environmental Management and Protection with minors in biology and Indigenous studies in natural resources and the environment. Since graduating, she has worked as a research assistant at Grassy Bar Oyster Co. She will begin the 2026–28 program in Madrid, Spain, before studying in the United Kingdom, Mexico and Portugal. Cango Ruiz is the third Cal Poly student accepted into GLOBE in two years.

New Student Success Mini-Grants Available
Culture and Institutional Excellence is excited to launch the Cal Poly Student Success Mini-Grant Program. Open to faculty, staff, students, departments and colleges across the San Luis Obispo and Solano campuses, the program provides funding to develop, strengthen or expand initiatives that advance student success. Grounded in the CSU Student Success Framework, mini-grants support innovative, student-centered approaches that turn Cal Poly’s commitment to student success into action. Proposed projects should support strategies that align with Cal Poly’s progress toward becoming a Hispanic-Serving Institution, advance Black Student Success Initiatives, implement the CSU Student Success Framework and increase collaborations across the university.

New Interfaith Resources Webpage
Culture and Institutional Excellence has launched an Interfaith Resources webpage to promote religious literacy across the university community. The page helps faculty, staff and students consider religious holidays and observances when planning the academic year. This webpage includes a downloadable interfaith calendar featuring key holidays observed across a range of faith and religious traditions. It also provides guidance on religious dietary practices and accommodations, along with information for students and faculty at both the San Luis Obispo and Solano campuses on how to request religious accommodations.

Call for Honorary Degree Nominations – Due Oct. 9
Nominations are open for academic year 2026-27 honorary degrees to be awarded at Cal Poly’s May 2027 Commencement ceremonies. Nominations are invited from both the San Luis Obispo and Solano campuses, reflecting the full breadth of our university community. Recipients are selected to recognize inspirational character, excellence and extraordinary achievement, or meritorious service to the CSU, California, the nation or humanity at large. Please see the CSU Policy for Awarding Honorary Degrees for the full criteria. Please submit your nominations by 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9.

Join the Staff Learning Community on Sept. 16 from 11:10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for “Preparing for Benefits Open Enrollment.” Learn about this year’s benefits plan changes and get answers to your enrollment questions. Open enrollment runs from Sept. 14 through Oct. 9 and offers an opportunity to choose a different insurance plan or sign up for a new one.

DPN is a strategic effort to promote programs and initiatives across campus and within the local community that promote equity and belonging. Cal Poly Pier Open House Set for Saturday, Oct. 10
Cal Poly’s Center for Coastal Marine Sciences cordially invites the community to tour the Cal Poly Pier in Avila Beach from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10. The Cal Poly Pier is just over a half-mile long (1.2 miles round-trip). Event activities will be held at the end of the pier located on Avila Beach Drive, just west of the San Luis Creek Bridge. Visitors will enjoy 360-degree views of San Luis Bay, learn about marine science and interact with touch tanks full of live marine creatures.

Visit the Fair Thee Well Health Fair on Sept. 17
Students and staff are invited to attend Fair thee Well, a health and wellness fair hosted by Campus Health and Wellbeing and Students with Dependents on Sept. 17 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Campus Health and Wellbeing lawn. Fair Thee Well will feature a variety of important on- and off-campus resources to help new and returning students be well and thrive. Hosted by Cal Poly Career Services in partnership with the Orfalea College of Business, the Cal Poly Business Career Fair will be held Friday, Sept. 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Cal Poly Recreation Center. The fair connects employers with driven, career-ready business students from one of the top polytechnic universities in the nation. This is an excellent opportunity for employers to make meaningful connections with students across various business disciplines.

Richard Cortez Vocal Jazz Masterclass Set for Sept. 18
Guest artist Richard Cortez will give a free presentation at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 18, in Room 216 of the Davidson Music Center. An internationally touring jazz vocalist and recording artist, Cortez has performed at renowned venues, including Birdland and Jazz at Lincoln Center.
In this interactive masterclass, he will share with students his experience exploring interpretation, improvisation, phrasing, rhythm, space, listening and ensemble communication.
