Resources for Tsunami Preparedness Week
California observes Tsunami Preparedness Week each March, an effort led by the National Weather Service and the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services to raise awareness about tsunami hazards and warning systems along the Pacific Coast. In 2025, an earthquake caused small tsunami waves across the coast, including at Cal Poly Pier. Tsunami warnings may be delivered through several systems, including wireless emergency alerts, emergency broadcast messages and PolyAlerts. Natural warning signs for a tsunami include a strong or long earthquake, the ocean suddenly pulling away from the shoreline or a loud roar coming from the ocean.
