Computer Science Student Wins Cal Poly Elevator Pitch Event
A Cal Poly computer science freshman took home the $1,000 first-place prize for Communicare at the Cal Poly Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) 16th annual Elevator Pitch Competition. “I’m happy. Leading up to this, I was very stressed, but I want to give a shout-out to my communications Professor Jon Kawashima, who gave me the confidence to do this,” said Carter Lim, of Bellingham, Washington. His AI-powered tool is designed to make communication coaching affordable and accessible, helping users practice their speaking skills in just minutes a day.

Cal Poly, California State Parks Invite Community to ‘Tide and Seek’ During King Tides
Cal Poly and California State Parks are teaming up to offer a “Tide and Seek” photo game during the king tides in San Luis Obispo County, with an event stand open from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 5, at the Morro Bay Natural History Museum. This is part of the California King Tides Project, a citizen science effort using photos of high tides to visualize how rising seas may affect California’s coastline and communities. Cal Poly’s Civil and Environmental Engineering Department partners with the California Coastal Commission and California State Parks to encourage public participation in the project.

Cal Poly Jazz Combos Showcase Set for Dec. 4
The Cal Poly Jazz Combos will present a fall showcase at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, in the Pavilion of the Performing Arts Center. Four jazz combos will perform a mix of well-known jazz standards, contemporary works, pop songs and original student compositions. The combos are directed by Dylan Johnson. The event is free, but a permit is required to park on campus.

Christian Sands Trio Comes to Spanos Theatre
Cal Poly Arts presents “Christian Sands Trio: Christmas Stories” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, in Spanos Theatre. Pianist and composer Christian Sands enchants audiences with his dynamic sensitivity and imaginative touch. A multi-Grammy nominee and Steinway Artist, Sands and his trio have become renowned for their engaging and responsive approach to jazz. Bringing the magic of the festive season to San Luis Obispo, they will showcase an energetic mix of original compositions and cherished holiday classics. This event has a 20-percent staff and faculty discount available.

Celebrate the Holidays at Civic Ballet of SLO’s ‘The Nutcracker’
Civic Ballet of SLO presents its annual performance of “The Nutcracker” Friday through Sunday, Dec. 12 to 14, at the Performing Arts Center’s Harold Miossi Hall. For over 40 years, the ballet has presented this holiday classic (including over 25 years at the PAC). Lori Lee Silvaggio’s “The Nutcracker” is filled with all the pageantry, magic and wonder that have made this one of the most enduring holiday traditions worldwide. You won’t want to miss this ballet experience, featuring the OperaSLO Grand Orchestra, sterling production values and San Luis Obispo County’s finest dancers. Save the Date for ‘SLO Master Chorale: Holiday Festival’
SLO Master Chorale presents its annual Holiday Festival and Sing-Along “Messiah” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, at the Performing Arts Center’s Harold Miossi Hall. Join the San Luis Obispo Master Chorale in performing Handel’s ever-popular masterpiece, “Messiah.” Thomas Davies conducts as the audience is invited to sing choruses from Handel’s masterwork, plus works by Meredith Brammeier, Paul Osborne and Robert Shaw/Robert Russell Bennett carol arrangements. The SLO Master Chorale will be joined by Los Angeles’s Westwood Brass and Paul Woodring on the tremendous Forbes Pipe Organ. It’s a family tradition!
