Black Student Stories

Admissions Officer – Admissions, Recruitment, Financial Aid | Black Student Union Club Advisor

Cal Poly has been instrumental in creating opportunities for my educational and professional development as a student services professional. I have been able to find a sense of belonging through meaningful student and peer connections at Cal Poly and I have found a sense of purpose as a mentor and club advisor to the Black Student Union. I believe the opportunities presented to me contribute to the success and holistic development of all Cal Poly students.

My time at Cal Poly has been enhanced because of the communities I have found on campus. The National Society of Black Engineers has secured me several summer internships, helped me develop numerous soft skills via leadership positions, and most importantly, given me lifelong friendships.

Before even applying to Cal Poly, I researched all things related to the Black student experience, both on and off-campus. I was excited to discover the Black Academic Excellence Center — a whole center dedicated to the excellence of Black students. The center is somewhat of a haven to me. It’s a place where I can study and find community in conversations with other people who look like me.
