The Writing Proficiency Exam
( a.k.a. the WPE)

The WPE is one of three ways to meet the GWR (remember the other two involve English courses).
The WPE is a two hour expository ( “giving and explaining information”)
essay which tests your ability
to organize and develop ideas, to make and support generalizations, and to use language at the level
expected of and appropriate for a college graduate.
The WPE essays are expected to be 500 words or more (3-5 pages in length). Many people choose
to meet the GWR through the Writing Proficiency Exam and, of course, we have a Frequently Asked
Questions section for this too.
When should I take the WPE?
After completing 90-units of course work, usually during your junior year. This degree requirement must
be fulfilled before your diploma can be awarded. Upper-division students should meet this requirement
before their senior evaluation is completed and graduate students must meet this requirement before
applying for candidacy within the Master’s Program.
Take the WPE as soon as possible to eliminate any stress or last minute holds
on your diploma. Plan in advance and take the WPE well before graduation, so if you have bad writing
day or the topic stumps you, you will have many other opportunities to pass the exam. Also, if you don’t
pass the first time, be sure to take advantage of the individual essay assessment offered by the Writing
Skills Program. The counselors can help you form a clear idea of the level of writing expected on this exam
and help you to determine what you need to do to pass the WPE and/or meet the GWR.
When is the WPE offered? Unfortunately, the WPE comes around very
early in the quarter--at 9 am on a Saturday very early in the quarter,
each quarter except summer. The WPE dates are
listed on the Student Planning Calendar in the Class Schedule.
Your department will, or should, have a GWR poster specifying dates and
sign-up deadlines. And yes, the longer you wait to sign-up, the more you
pay. Spaces are guaranteed for everyone who pays by the deadline.
However, the late sign-ups are based on available space with a late fee
payment.
How do I sign up for the WPE? Please, make your space
reservations by signing up at the Cashier's Office in the
Administration Building. The $25 fee may be paid there. It is best to
reserve a seat for the WPE as soon as possible. The deadline for WPE
sign-ups is one week before the test --at the end of the second week of
classes. The cashier will give you information about the exam and the
workshops to help you prepare.
