Preparing for the WPE
    (continued)

How will I find out if I passed?

You will self-address an envelope when you take the WPE. Your score will be mailed to you three to four weeks after the exam. Remember, a score of eight or higher is passing. The following quarter the GWR flag on your records will change to “T” (test passed) and your name will disappear from the list in your department.

What happens if I do not pass the WPE?

You will receive a notice with your score inviting you to set up an appointment for a private counseling session. A writing counselor will go over your essay with you and help you to understand your writing strengths and weaknesses. In addition, he or she may explain several strategies to help you improve your writing skills for the next WPE. And, yes, you can take the WPE as many times as necessary to receive a passing score. There is a $25 fee for each administration.

May I have a copy of my exam?

No. But, you may request to see your exam and go over its contents with a writing lab tutor who will return your essay to the Writing Skills Office after your session.

May I have extra time to take the WPE?

In special cases, some students may need extra time to write a 500-word essay, such as a multi-lingual speaker or someone registered with the Disability Resource Center (DRC). Arrangements must be made with Writing Skills or the DRC before signing up for the WPE at the Cashier’s Office.
