The GWR's Frequently Asked Questions

    Transfer Students

May I transfer GWR credits previously earned at a Non-CSU campus?

You may request to have your previous certification applied to your current degree objective. Any previous certification for all degree programs is valid only if it has been awarded within seven years of matriculation at Cal Poly. You need to talk with Pat Grimes in the Writing Skills Office (Building 10, Room 130) about this.

Can I meet the GWR through course work taken at another campus?

Sorry, but no. Campus policy specifically accepts only the transfer of GWR-approved coursework from another CSU campus to meet the GWR at Cal Poly.

If I was GE-certified at my community college, does that cover the GWR requirement?

No. The GWR is an upper-division requirement. Therefore, community college coursework may not be used to meet this requirement.

May I go to another CSU campus to meet the GWR?

No. All Cal Poly students must meet the GWR, or its equivalent options, while in residence.

    Credential Candidates

You need to meet and discuss your requirements with your department advisor before enrolling in a GWR-approved course or taking the WPE.

    Graduate Students

If you are seeking your Master's Degree, you need to fulfill the GWR within your first quarter of residency in order to be advanced to candidacy. You may meet the GWR through a GWR-approved course or the WPE.
