WS 301 Introduction to Women's Studies
(4 Units) Satisfies GE D5, U.S. Cultural Pluralism Requirement
Introduction to theories and research on sex differentiation, stratification, and gender role development. How historical, political, and cultural factors (e.g., race, class) have affected women's lives as well as how women have shaped their social and cultural environments. WS 301 is usually offered in Fall, Winter and Spring quarters.

WS 450 Feminist Theory
(4 Units) Satisfies US Cultural Pluralism Requirement
Feminist Theory explores the history and evolution of ideas about gender, race/ethnicity and sexual identity. Special attention to considering how social, historical, and ideological forces, organized by the central, intertwine concepts of gender and race, shape both our critical thinking and our lives.

*PSY 314 Psychology of Women
(4 Units)
Central issues in feminine psychology including stereotypes, gender differences, sex roles, sex typing, female sexuality, pregnancy and childbirth, women as victims, mental and emotional disorders of women, and aging. Usually offered in Winter and Spring quarters.

*SOC 311 Sociology of Gender
(4 Units)
Description and analysis of the impact of gender definitions on men and women in society. Special attention is given to the learning process; the creation and perpetuation of gender stereotypes and the way these affect individual life chances and social structure, explored in the areas of work, education, family and abusive relationships. Focus on media presentation of gender and effects of ethnicity and class.

WS 311 Women in Cross-Cultural Perspective
(4 Units) Satisfies GE D5.
Similarities and differences in women's lives internationally. Cultural influences such as ethnicity, lineage, caste, class, nationality, race, and religion and how they interact in shaping women's status. WS 411 is usually offered in Winter quarter.

WS 340 Sexuality Studies
( 4 Units) Satisfies GE D5)
Examines sexuality in a cultural and historical context, explores changing definitions of human subjectivity, investigates the cultural and social regimes that control and create sexuality (including the “invention” of homo/heterosexuality and the social, legal and political systems that define sexual ab/normality), addresses contemporary issues of sexual orientation and topics of sexuality in relation to gender and race.     

*WS/ES 350 Gender, Race, Science and Technology
(4 Units) Applications and histories of reproductive technologies and the ways in which these technologies are linked to the science of the body. How these technologies help to construct and deconstruct race and gender in the United States. Prerequisite: Completion of GE Area B requirements or consent of instructor.

*WS/RELS 370 Religion, Gender and Society
(4 Units) Satisfies GE C4 and US Cultural Pluralism Requirement.
Critical examination of religious ideas and institutions in America in relation to gender, race and politics. Focus on women and religion, the religious experience of minorities, and on politics. Prerequisite: Completion of GE Area A, and PHIL 230 or PHIL 231; one religious studies course or consent of instructor. Usually offered in Winter quarter.

WS 401 Seminar in Women's Studies
(4 Units) Intensive study of a selected topic in Women's Studies (such as women and work, women and the law, women in the arts). The topic will be listed in the Class Schedule. Field experience may be required as appropriate. May be repeated for up to 8 units. WS 401 is usually offered Spring quarter.

*WS/HIST 434 American Women's History to 1870
(4 Units)
Female ideology and experience from the colonial period through the American Civil War. Use of a variety of sources, including women's own writing, in order to understand the history of women as it both reflects and shapes American culture and society.

*WS/HIST 435 American Women's History from 1870
(4 Units) Satisfies US Cultural Pluralism Requirement
The female past in the modern period of US history. Considers how transformations in gender roles are reflective of other significant changes in American culture and society. Emphasis on class, race, and ethnic variations in women's experience. Usually taught in Fall quarter.

ENGL 345 Women Writers
(4 Units) Satisfies GE C4 and US Cultural Pluralism Requirement
Literature by women with attention to the woman artist and the creative process. Discussion of women writers and the dominant literary tradition with consideration of the existence of a women's literary tradition.

ENGL 349 Gender in 20th Century Literature
(4 Units) Satisfies GE C4 and US Cultural Pluralism Requirement
In-depth study of issues related to male and female identity and the relations between men and women as depicted in the twentieth-century fiction, poetry, non-fiction, and/or drama. How gender issues are created and viewed from different perspectives, such as social/economic class, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. Prerequisite: Completion of GE Areas A and C1.

ENGL 439 Significant British Writers: Gender In Medieval Literature
(4 Units) This course will explore the intersection between literature and gender in the Middle Ages.

ENGL 449 Significant American Writers: African American Women Writers (4 Units)

ENGL 459 Significant World Writers: Literature and the Goddess
(4 Units) An examination of the re-emerging icon of the Goddess in pre-patriarchal myths and Western consciousness.

ENGL 495 Topics in Applied Language Study: Language and Gender
(4 Units) An examination of gender differences in language behavior and the role of language in constructing gender in our society.

ES 300 Chicano/a Literature
(4 Units) Satisfies GE C4 and US Cultural Pluralism Requirement
Overview of contemporary Chicano/a literary production since 1848. Aztlan as an ancient myth and contemporary metaphor will be emphasized. Thematic concerns and literary techniques that appear in poetry short stories, novels and drama of Chicano/a writers. Historical and socio-economic factors that have shaped Chicano and Chicana fiction.

ES 325 African American Women's Experiences
(4 Units) Satisfies US Cultural Pluralism Requirement
An examination of the experiences of African American women in the United States from 1619 through the contemporary era. Focus is on experiences as an integral and unique aspect of American ethnic women.

KINE 323 Sport and Gender
(4 Units) Satisfies GE D5 Requirement
Familiarize students with the intersections between sport and gender in American society. Explore, historical, sociological, and psychological issues that affect the sport experiences of males and females, especially as they relate to class, race/ethnicity, sexuality and political movements.

MU 328 Women in Music
(4 Units) Satisfies GE Area A and a foundation course in Area C.
Survey of women's contributions as composers and performers of western art and popular music; historical overview of the experiences and perception of women as musicians. Examines the role of women in the history of western art music.

POLS 310 Politics of Ethnicity and Gender
(4 Units) Satisfies US Cultural Pluralism Requirement.
Analysis of factors that affect the changing role of women and major ethnic groups in American Politics. Involvement, organization and role of minority groups in the political process.

POLS 457 Politics of Reproductive Policy
( 4 Units) Critically examine the history, development, implementation and the relative success of various reproductive policies. Critically evaluate these policies using a feminist theoretical framework and political science perspective.

(4 Units) Traditional roles and status of women in Chinese, Japanese and Korean societies. Changes due to industrialization, revolution and the impact of Western ideas and their implications for today's women. .

Examination of a variety of female theater artists from the Greeks to the present and the socio-political contexts from which they emerged. Emphasis on 20th century playwriting and evolving visions of women. Glaspell, Hansberry, Hellman, Henley, McCullers, and Shange covered.

WS316 Art History: Women as Subject and Object in Art History
(4 Units)
An exploration of the role of women in the visual arts. The course will focus on women as artists, women as portrayed in art, and feminist theory as it applies to the study of the visual arts and art history.
