  • What is a class alias?

A class email alias is an electronic mailing list stored on the Central UNIX system that contains the email addresses of all faculty and students associated with a particular class. The purpose of the class email alias is to simplify the process of communicating with students via email. Use of class email aliases is subject to all of the same policies as other email use.

How to use the automatically generated class email alias

At the beginning of the quarter an email messages will be sent to faculty as new class aliases are assigned to them. The name of an alias is based on the course abbreviation, number, section, year and quarter.

To send email to the class email alias use the fully qualified name, as follows:

    aliasname@calpoly.edu

When is the class email alias created/updated?

Class email aliases for the upcoming quarter will be created around the 7th or 8th week of the current quarter. Each class email alias is updated nightly in order to reflect student enrollment actions, including adds and drops in the class.

    Reply to?

When a user replies to any messages sent to the class email alias, the message will be sent to every person who is a member of the alias. Please make sure your students understand this as it could generate a lot of unnecessary email messages.

Who can use the class email alias?

Anyone who knows the name of the class email alias will be able to use it. Because of this,  there is potential for abuse (SPAM). If you feel the class email alias is being used inappropriately, you may request that the class email alias be renamed or disabled. For more information go to the advanced user guide.

How do I add new members to the class alias?

For information on adding additional members who are not enrolled in the class to the class email alias (e.g., a grader or student assistant), see the advanced user guide.

What if some students don't get the email?

The program used to generate the class email aliases will use the student's username@calpoly.edu. In almost all cases, this sends mail to the student's Cal Poly email account (Oracle Email). If the student wants to use AOL, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc. instead of their Cal Poly email account, then they should:
