Please consult the Statistics Department Advising page.
Major Requirements
Requirements for the Statistics degree are available here in three formats: a curriculum sheet, a flowchart, and the official Cal Poly Catalog description.
Curriculum sheet
A curriculum sheet lists the major, support, general education and elective courses required to earn your statistics degree. You can use this in conjunction with your Degree Progress Report on the Cal Poly Portal to keep track of your degree requirements.
Paper copies of previous curriculum sheets are available outside the Statistics Department office (25-107D).
Flowchart
A flowchart gives you an idea of what courses to take on a quarter-by-quarter basis. The flowchart presents one possible path to a Statistics degree; others would be equally valid. You should talk to your major advisor regularly to select courses. See the Statistics Department Advising page for a list of department major advisors.
If you're on an earlier catalog, work directly with your major advisor to select classes.
Catalog description
Use the links below to view the requirements for graduating with a Statistics degree as listed in the official Cal Poly Catalog. You are entitled to graduate on any version of the catalog requirements starting from the "active" catalog when you became a Statistics major.

Benchmarks (Minimum Progress Requirements)
All Statistics majors are expected to meet the following "benchmarks" for minimum progress in the major. Failure to meet these benchmarks may result in administrative probation and a hold on future enrollments. Your major advisor and the College of Science and Mathematics Advising Center are here to help you meet these benchmarks. If you have any questions or concerns, contact your advisor.
Note: References below do not count summer quarter. For example, completion of a benchmark "by the end of four quarters" means by the end of fall quarter in your second year.
Statistics Major Benchmarks
- Complete MATH 141 by the end of three quarters
- Complete MATH 142 by the end of four quarters
- Complete CSC/CPE 235 (or CSC/CPE 101) by the end of five quarters
- Complete STAT 301 by the end of five quarters
- Complete STAT 302 by the end of six quarters
- Complete at least three of STAT 323, 324, 325, 330 by the end of nine quarters
Senior Project
All Statistics majors must complete a senior project (STAT 461-462). The Statistics Department holds an information session at the beginning of each academic year; attendance is required for all seniors. Please consult the Senior Project Guidelines below for a list of specific requirements. The Library also has new guidelines concerning electronic submission of senior projects; see the link below.
