CHILD CARE PROTECTIVE SERVICES (contact

Students work in one of a number of different programs that try to help
abused and deprived children, and deal with the issues of distressed families.

DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES (contact

In addition to the specific social service programs mentioned above, there
are several additional internship possibilities in the San Luis Obispo County
Department of Social Services.

Students work with emotionally disturbed young people in a school setting.
Two or more quarters preferred.
PROBATION OFFICER INTERNSHIPS - SLO (contact
Dr. Coleman 756-1230)
Students serve as Probation Officers with juvenile case loads after
several weeks of training by SLO County Probation Department Staff; can
begin Fall or Spring Quarters (interview preceding quarter). Has traditionally
been our most popular internship although there are enough slots for most or
all applicants. Three quarters normally expected.
SAN LUIS OBISPO GENERAL HOSPITAL (contact

Students participate in social service programs focused on the needs of
county hospital patients; generally working directly with patients in need. Two
or more quarters preferred.
TRANSITIONS (SLO Transistions, Inc. (contact Dr. Coleman 756-1230)
Students work with youths [8-17] in temporary shelter.
Two or more quarters preferred.
UNITED WAY AGENCY, SLO CITY (contact
Dr. Shaffer 756-1374)
Interns experience community action, fund procurement and allocation,
program screening and, long-range planning which can qualify the student
for jobs in over 2,300 United Way Agencies nationwide; includes networking
possibilities within United Way for future employment.

VICTIM WITNESS ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (contact Dr. Coleman 756-1230)
Students participate in a program under the District Attorney's office
designed to help the victims of violent crime and the witnesses who testify in
criminal cases.
Two or more quarter required.
