OUTLINE: Sustainable Design II - Site and Microclimate Design
I. Build a “design bridge” between
architecture and landscape architecture through a site-context based design
project
a. Teach students how their majors/professions relate to one another and to other
majors/professions
i. Common interdisciplinary focused design problem as a way to understanding
roles and responsibilities
1. Role playing (activity)
ii. Professional focus
1. Reveal shortcomings of standard practice and how sustainable design works
to overcome these
2. Increase complexity by adding technical issues
b. Based on more than form-generative process. More criteria than traditional
design.
c. How to translate cultural issues into physical form.
II. Develop an understanding of the land through shared fundamental/support courses.
a. Site analysis (connects to scientific-technical basis) [1d]
i. Climate, hydrology, soils, cultural history
ii. Surveying and map reading
iii. Geomorphology
b. Program analysis (connects to cultural basis) [1f-2f-3f]
i. Project (building and site) function/occupant use
ii. Parameterization of design problem and development of “design brief” (formalize
culture)
iii. Develop and discuss land ethic as well as ecology (above)
c. Arts & Craft (connects to creative, appropriate artistic basis)
III. Aesthetic abilities develop through spatial, kinesthetic,
and visual (Arts & Crafts)
experiences. [5b-f]
1. Sculpture
2. Painting
3. Photography
