Kelly Sondeno
The Division of Student Affairs has a bit of Cal Poly history in the family in the shape of Kelly Sondeno, a student assistant in the Office of the Vice President. When Kelly’s great-grandfather, Lee Fletcher, left Arkansas and headed to Cal Poly with his wife and daughter in 1931, it was the height of the Depression. He had no idea the University would play such a major role in his life and in the lives of three generations to come.
Fletcher lived on campus for 32 years, working as farm foreman and superintendent of the Farm Shop. Fletcher’s daughter Shirley met her husband, Joseph Sondeno (EE ’49), among the 2,000 students on the all-male campus. The couple’s son Dudley Sondeno (ME ’75) always knew he would go to Cal Poly. The campus had left its mark when he visited his grandparents in the 50s, catching tractor rides with granddad Lee Fletcher.
Now as fate – or family – would have it, Dudley’s daughter, Kelly, proudly carries on the tradition. A nutrition major, Kelly has worked in the Vice President’s office since March 2006. She jokes that there was “no pressure to go to Cal Poly.” She is thrilled with her choice, and her father and grandparents couldn’t be happier.
