The Cal Poly chapter of the PRSSA is here to help you become a knowledgeable and qualified public relations practitioner. The PRSSA is affiliated with the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), the world’s premier association of public relations professionals.
By joining PRSSA, you will:
Gain a better understanding of current practices in public relations.
Learn from communications professionals who make presentations and meet with members at our PRSSA chapter meetings.
Learn how to create an effective cover letter and professional resume.
Get the assistance you need to produce a professional portfolio of work that will help you get the job you want after graduation.
Be able to apply for scholarships to help pay your college costs. Go to this link for scholarship information and application forms you may need, if you are a PRSSA member: http://www.prssa.org/resources/MemberAwards.asp
Receive the PRSA’s Tactics newspaper (a monthly paper filled with hands-on ideas for becoming an expert PR practitioner).
Get access to the PRSA’s restricted web site that has research help, career-building advice, and job listings from all 50 states.
Attend PRSA’s national convention and the PRSSA national assembly. At these gatherings you can learn from nationally-recognized experts and meet PRSSA members from other colleges and universities. (Limited travel assistance may be available to PRSSA members through the Cal Poly Journalism Department.)
Have the opportunity to get hands-on experience working with other PRSSA members in PR campaigns and event planning for our department. (For example, PRSSA put together the April, 2007 Journalism Town Hall meeting and is the lead coordinating group for Journalism Week in October, 2007.)
Have the opportunity to move into a chapter leadership position that will give you organizational communication experience and, as the saying goes, looks great on your resume.
Membership in PRSSA is $60 per year ($50 for national, and $10 for our chapter).
We accept new members in October and again in March. It’s a small investment with a huge return - to help ensure your success as a new PR professional upon your graduation from Cal Poly.
Our 2007-08 officers, elected May 31, 2007, are:
Courtney Sterk, President
Kristen Cass, Vice President
Julie Hauser, Treasurer
Krizia Torres, Secretary
