Welcome to

Caveat emptor
The purpose of this homepage is to help students
in my classes to review certain fundamental materials such as the syllabus,
the class calendar and any other materials that I haved determined to be
appropriate for the World Wide Web. During the course of the quarter
I will be updating these pages, so it will be worthwhile for my students
to bookmark this page or the specific class page whose links can be found
below. Please note that the inability to access these pages at any
time does not constitute sufficient reason to not turn in homework,
to not attend class when a quiz or mid-term exam is given. I am striving
to make this site one which provides quick (but redundant) reference to
materials I have given out in class.

The image to the left demonstrates that the problem of the interface
between farming and urban development is one which is not simply limited
to the Central Valley of California or the rest of the United States or
even limited to conventional agriculture. The picture below shows
how the urban fringe of the metropolis of Guayaquil (in the country of
Ecuador) abuts the very large and economically significant shrimp ponds
where pennaeus vannamei are cultured. Concerns about pollution
from urban areas are paramount to many shrimp farmers concerned about disease
and low quality product whose primary markets are the United States and
Europe.
