Cal Poly Debuts 2009-10 Choirs in Concert Oct. 24
SAN LUIS OBISPO -- The Cal Poly Choirs will perform their annual Debut Concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, in Harman Hall in the Performing Arts Center's Christopher Cohan Center.
Titled “Sounds of Autumn,” the program will feature selections that portray the essence of fall.
Two poems, each titled "Im Herbst" (German for "In Fall") will be performed as composed by Johannes Brahms and Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel (sister of Felix), respectively.
Texts set by César Alejandro Carrillo (Venezuela), David Mooney (Ireland), and American composers Samuel Barber and Eric Whitacre, give beautiful meaning to their settings for the season. Ghoulish tones will be heard in honor of Halloween. ‘A Festive Alleluia’ composed by the Australian composer John Nickson, and Beethoven’s famous ‘Hallelujah’ from “The Mount of Olives” bookend the concert.
Cal Poly Music Professor Thomas Davies conducts PolyPhonics and The University Singers. Pianists Susan Azaret Davies and Paul Woodring will accompany the choirs.
In addition, Cal Poly’s Barbershop Quartets and the a cappella ensemble “Take It SLO” will perform. Outstanding student soloists will also perform.
Tickets are $13 and $15 general, $12 and $14 seniors and $8 students, and can be purchased at the Performing Arts Ticket Office 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. To order by phone, call SLO-ARTS (805-756-2787). Discounts are given to patrons who buy tickets to four or more Music Department events for 2008-2009. The concert is sponsored by Cal Poly's Music Department, College of Liberal Arts, and Instructionally Related Activities program. For more information, call the Music Department at 805-756-2406.
