Ross T. Sears (1951-2012)
Applied Percussion, Percussion Ensemble
The Cal Poly Music Department with the San Luis Obispo Symphony and Festival Mozaic hosted a memorial celebration in Ross' honor on Thursday, May 17, 2012, at 5:30 p.m. in Cal Poly's Spanos Theatre.
Our friend and colleague, Ross Sears, passed away unexpectedly at his home March 18, 2012. He had been Cal Poly's percussion instructor and percussion ensemble director. Ross was a loyal and generous member of our department who cared very deeply for his students. He was a considerate colleague, a fine musician and teacher.
Ross earned a master's degree in percussion from San Jose State University and a bachelor's degree from the Indiana University School of Music. He studied with Anthony Cirone, George Gaber and Forrest Clark. He had been a percussionist with San Jose Symphony, Opera San Jose, West Bay Opera, Monterey Symphony, San Jose Civic Light Opera, Symphony Orchestra of Maracaibo-Venezuela and San Diego Symphony and Opera. He performed locally with the San Luis Obispo Symphony, Opera San Luis Obispo, Cuesta Master Chorale, Vocal Arts Ensemble, PCPA Theatrefest, Festival Mozaic, Santa Barbara Symphony and Santa Maria Philharmonic. He also freelanced with various jazz groups.
