Student Opera Theatre

Past Production photos

Student Opera Theatre, in collaboration with Opera San Luis Obispo, provides annual fully staged productions with professional directors, costumers, pianists and band or orchestra. Performances and programs are designed to serve as many student soloists as possible, and promote training in opera/theater performance technique.

Additional solo performances for voice students are provided through master classes with renowned and distinguished guest artists, annual concerts for the local "Opera Lovers" group and solo competitions. In addition, Opera SLO provides auditions for comprimario or chorus members in its productions, plus participation in its OperaSLO To Go, an educational outreach program.

Being involved in an annual staged production will helps provide necessary career and life skills. Cal Poly Student Opera Theatre casts a large number of student vocalists, instrumentalists, stage craft technicians and assistants, then trains them in performance technique, aria and song study, stage direction and blocking, acting and audition technique, and technical and stage craft techniques. Past productions include Puccini's "Suor Angelica," scenes from Strauss "Der Rosenkavalier," "Oklahoma," Haydn's "Apothecary," Mozart's "Impresario," Purcell's "Dido and Aeneas," "Die Fledermaus," "The Kurt Weill Show" and additional classic scenes from opera and Broadway. Each involved performance opportunities for 20-40 students.
