Chemistry 317 is the second quarter of the three-quarter sequence in organic chemistry. For those who are just joining this sequence, it must be realized that this sequence is designed for students who will continue in chemistry, biology, medicine, or other strong science disciplines. The course is meant to be challenging. I must warn you at the outset that if you fall behind you will not survive the course. Treat this course like a math course. Work on a daily schedule. Don't let your questions and uncertainties build up. Use my office hours, and take advantage of the tutoring services that are available to you.

Assigned problems are not collected for grading. Check your work with the answer book or with me. Work the problems in the text as you are doing your reading and then return to them a second time later. Working in study groups can be helpful as long as all members contribute.

Point Distribution and Grading

Your total points will be calculated by each of the formulas shown below. For assignment of the final course grade, the greater of the two total point values will be used.

3 x (100) = 300 pts Preliminary Exams 2 x (150 pts) = 300 pts Preliminary Exams
= 50 pts Online Homework   = 50 pts Online Homework
= 100 pts Final Exam   = 100 pts Final Exam
  = 250 pts Laboratory   = 250 pts Laboratory
  = 700 pts Total   = 700 pts Total

Grade assignments will be based upon total points earned (including laboratory).

Remember that your submissions are to be in legible, clear, coherent English. Honesty is essential in preparing your submissions. Failure in this matter is cause for dismissal from the University.
