Organic Laboratory Techniques, Fessenden, Fessenden and Feist, 3rd. edition
Welcome to Chemistry 316! Organic Chemistry is a subject that I enjoy immensely. I hope you will also find it enjoyable. I must warn you at the outset, however, that if you fall behind you will not survive the course. Treat this course like a math course. Work on a daily schedule. Don't let your questions and uncertainties build up. Use my office hours, and take advantage of the tutoring services that are available to you.
Assigned problems are not collected for grading. Check your work with the answer book or with me. Work the problems in the text as you are doing your reading and then return to them again later. Working in study groups can be helpful as long as all members contribute.
Your total points will be calculated by each of the formulas shown below. For assignment of the final course grade, the greater of the two total point values will be used.
3 x (85pts)
= 255 pts Preliminary Exams 2 x (85 pts) = 170 pts Preliminary Exams = 145 pts Final Exam = 230 pts Final Exam = 100 pts Laboratory = 100 pts Laboratory = 500 pts Total = 500 pts Total
Grade assignments will be based upon total points earned including laboratory.
(450-500 pts) 90 - 100% A (390-449 pts) 78 - 89% B (315-389 pts) 63 - 77% C (250-314 pts) 50 - 62% D (< 250 pts) < 50% F
Remember that your submissions are to be in legible, clear, coherent English. Honesty is essential in preparing your submissions. Failure in this matter is cause for dismissal from the University.
Wednesday, 1 July - Last day to add/drop a course by CPReg (remember to checkout from your laboratory drawer when you withdraw from lecture).
Thursday, 30th July- Last day to withdraw from the 8-week session.
Wednesday, August 19 (9:10-11:00 am) Final Exam
Make-up exams are not given. The final must be taken as scheduled.
