KME Meetings

November 15 2012

Agenda

  1. Having the summer research professors come in during the spring to talk about their research projects and recruit potential students.
  2. Having meetings throughout the year with all of the mathematics professors so that they can discuss their own research in order to give students a better idea about what they can do for their senior projects as well as figure out who they want to have as an advisor.
  3. Having events with students who are either doing or have completed a senior project to talk with students who are considering it. This would be done when the professors are not there in order to allow for a greater degree of honesty.
  4. Discussed the possibility of holding a mathematical banquet either once a month or once a quarter.
  5. Discussed the possibility of holding a mathematics competition that would be open to all majors. Something like an integration bee, since most students have experience with calculus.
  6. Discussed how to implement an opportunity for students who have done research, either as a result of REU, Senior Project, or just independent work, the opportunity to give presentations to fellow K.M.E members and math club members. This would be a great way for them to prepare for conferences, develop facility with public speaking in regards to technical subjects ( not the same as normal public speaking) and would also be a nice addition to a graduate application or job application, something which most math majors will probably pursue.
