Cal Poly Mathematics REU
Environment

Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, located in the scenic Central Coast region of California, about midway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, is a nationally ranked, four-year, comprehensive public university that emphasizes a "learn by doing'' educational experience.

Participants in the REU program will spend eight weeks on campus.  Each student will be provided with space in the dormitory and a meal plan, as well as a stipend of  $2500  to cover outside food and other expenses.  Additional money will be available for travel expenses. Participants will be enrolled during the summer as Cal Poly students, allowing them to receive up to 4 units of credit for their work, giving them privileges at campus libraries, recreational facilities, etc., and allowing them free use of city buses.  Participants will also be given office space by the Mathematics Department, and use of computer facilities.

We will schedule several social events, beginning with the introductory tour and gathering described on the Program Information page. Each week, we hope, there will be one or two social events, such as dinners at faculty homes, for all of the students and faculty to get to know each other better.

San Luis Obispo has an ideal climate in the summer and there are many interesting places to visit. Faculty will take interested students on trips to some of the wonderful beaches in the area, or on hikes in the local hills or in the nearby parks, such as Montaña de Oro State Park. Group activities, such as trips to the Hearst Castle in San Simeon, the Mid-State Fair in Paso Robles, and the Mozart Festival in San Luis Obispo, will be organized. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to explore on their own or in groups the many interesting places and activities in San Luis Obispo, such as the historic Mission or the weekly Farmers' Market.

You can follow the link to see pictures of the participants from the 2001 program, the 2002 program, the 2003 program, or the 2005 program. You will see photos from many of the social and recreational activities from the program.
