About The Program:

The Friday Club aims to bring the many benefits of learning physical skills and participating in physical activity to athletes with developmental disabilities. Working in collaboration with SLO County Special Olympics, Cal Poly students teach sports skills to Special Olympic Athletes.

After an introduction provided in collaboration with Special Olympics, students lead activities and offer instruction that aims to build the participants’ skills progressively throughout the quarter. Cal Poly Students report that this is some of the most rewarding work they have ever done and the participants always seem to have fun!

FAQ’s:

What if someone can't do all the skills involved in an activity?
Everyone is different and no two people have the same abilities. We simply modify activities so that everyone can participate. Some of our participants need a little help sometimes. To us, that makes them human, not disabled!

Isn't it dangerous to have people with disabilities participating in physical activity?
It's no more dangerous that it is for anyone else. Safety should be a concern for everyone participating in physical activity; Once safety concerns have been addressed there is no reason why people with disabilities shouldn't participate in any activity to an appropriate degree.

How can I get involved?
Contact Special Olympics. As soon as there's an opening, they'll sign you up!
