Cal Poly has been administering study abroad programs for more than two decades with student safety and security being the highest priority with program administration. The study abroad administrators monitor international conditions affecting student safety and provide relevant information to program participants. Cal Poly cannot guarantee student safety or eliminate all risks associated with a stay abroad. Students are required to participate in pre-departure orientations for all faculty-led quarter abroad programs and are responsible for becoming familiar with all materials provided, including safety guidelines and procedures. Orientation information (both printed and oral) contains information for faculty and students about health and safety issues related to international travel. Adherence to this information, along with adopting appropriate behavior for the host culture, using caution and common sense while abroad, can prevent many emergency situations.

Your health and safety during your study abroad experience will depend on the choices you make and precautions that you take prior, during, and following your time overseas. Before your departure, make sure that you are in good health, get any immunizations that are required and learn as much as you can about the health and safety conditions in your host country.
