Australia Study Program
The Australia Study Program provides an opportunity for two to three faculty members to lead a group of 35-45 students to Australia in winter quarter. The main site for the program in 2009 will be the University of Adelaide.

University of Adelaide’s main campus is set in the cultural heart of the city of Adelaide. Established in 1874 (the third oldest university in Australia), University of Adelaide is one of the Group of Eight Australian distinguished Universities.

Adelaide is the capital and most populous city of the Australian state of South Australia, and is the fifth largest city in Australia, with a population of over 1.1 million. It is a coastal city beside the Southern Ocean, and is situated on the Adelaide Plains. Adelaide has a temperate Mediterranean climate that encourages an outdoor lifestyle. Sunshine is abundant and the
climate suits a wide variety of social, recreational and sporting pursuits with warm, dry summers.

The study program will include eight weeks of classes and some weekend field trips to nearby sites. After the eight-week study program, students will have two additional weeks to explore Australia on their own.

The program will cover airfare, an adjusted per diem, and housing for participating faculty. The program will provide faculty with on-site accommodations with the student group for the eight-week period.

Cal Poly at Sea
The Cal Poly at Sea Program is offered in collaboration with the California Maritime Academy’s (CMA) Training Cruise Program. Cal Poly students and faculty spend two months in spring quarter aboard the The Golden Bear, a 500-foot ex-navy oceanographic vessel, which offers a unique living laboratory of shipboard experience, classroom instruction, and international travel. Participating faculty are strongly encouraged to incorporate in-port activities or field trips into their course offerings.

The charted course of the Cal Poly at Sea Cruise rotates according to a three-year cycle, each time visiting a different region of the Pacific. The South Pacific cruise has made stops in Nuka Hiva, Marquesas Islands; Papeete, Tahiti; Auckland, New Zealand; Brisbane, Australia; Suva, Fiji; and Honolulu, Hawaii. The South American Cruise includes stops in, Costa Rica, Chile, Cocos Island, Mexico, and then returns up the coast to Seattle. The Asian Cruise often visits Hawaii, the Philippines, China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Japan and exotic islands along the way.

Before departure, Cal Poly students and faculty must be CPR/ First Aid certified and must pass a life saving and survival at sea course. The Golden Bear is drug and alcohol free, except for beverages during official in-port receptions. Faculty are part of the crew and thus must undergo drug screening, have a physical exam, and provide other information. Lodging and meals are provided for faculty on the ship. Faculty stay in comfortable staterooms and dine with CMA instructors and the Captain.

Summer Study in London
Since 1984, over 2,500 students and 140 faculty have participated in the London Study program. The six-week Study in London Program is offered during the summer quarter. Students and faculty alike immerse themselves in courses that use London as a laboratory. While planned primarily for general education experiences in the arts, humanities, and social sciences, the program draws students from all majors. Courses are enriched by adjuncts and visiting lecturers from British institutions. It is part of the routine to leave the classroom to experience the art, music, history or architecture. Students take numerous field trips visiting London’s concert halls, theaters, museums, cathedrals, and halls of government.

Spending time in London as a student is a truly unforgettable experience. London is one of the world's great cultural and economic centers. The city's modern cosmopolitan identity combines a fascinating past with a present of more than 7 million people living, studying, working and playing in its different areas. The arts, theatre, nightlife, music, and literature are showcased in London.

Currently a housing allowance of $3,000 has been set aside for Cal Poly faculty members who teach in London. Participating facutly will also receive free roundtrip airfare. While in London, all faculty are invited to attend, at no cost, the weekly events scheduled as part of the social and cultural program.

Peru Study Abroad Program
The Peru Study Abroad Program is a five-week academic program to be offered in summer. Students will travel to Cuzco, Peru and enroll in 12 units of classes.

Cuzco, designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1983, is a city of 350,000 people situated at 10,800 feet in southern highlands. Cuzco, which means "naval of the universe," was the capital of the Inca Empire and is the continent's oldest continuously inhabited city. Conquered by the Spanish in 1533, Cuzco is one of the best preserved colonial cities in Latin America. Inca-built walls line the city's narrow and cobbled streets and still form the foundations for many buildings. The program will include field trips scheduled on the weekends to the Sacred Valley, including Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca, with a more lengthy field trip to the Peruvian Amazon at Manu National Park during the final week.

The Peru Program is open to all Cal Poly students. The program will offer three 4 unit courses, one of which is always be a Spanish language class (1st or 2nd year). The preference is for the other two to be General Education courses with content on Latin America. The two non-language courses should also be amenable to the inclusion of community-based project work, and should incorporate cultural activities and field trips.

The program will cover airfare, an adjusted per diem, and housing for participating faculty. The program will provide faculty with on-site accommodations with a host family in Cuzco.
