Migration to HP-UX Session Server, Migration of Ulib Home filesystem, End of Quarter Archives

Starting time of service interruption: Saturday, September 6 at 7:00 AM
Ending time of service interruption: Sunday, September 7 at 4:00 PM

What is the Reason for this Service Interruption?

There are three major reasons for this service interruption:

  1. User's accounts will be moved from the AIX session servers to the new HP session server.
  2. The ulib home filesystem will be moved from flute to the mail server, polymail.
  3. An end-of-quarter archive backup will be performed.

Who is Affected by this Service Interruption?

All users.

What Services will be Affected and How?

All services inclunding OpenMail and OpenTime will be unavailable during this time to allow for moving the filesystem. This filesystem affects many of the cluster services so these services will be unavailable during the migration to prevent loss of data. These services include, but are not limited to

Service How Users will be affected
OpenMail and OpenTime OpenMail and OpenTime will be unavailable.  The Web interface for OpenMail will also be unavailable.  All incoming mail from outside OpenMail will be delayed for the duration of the outage.
World Wide Web Users won't see pages housed on the Cal Poly central web server (www.calpoly.edu) or links to pages that are referred to off of the central web server.
Gopher Users will not be able to access documents on the Cal Poly gopher server. This includes pages referred to by other gopher and web servers.
UNIX Mail PINE, Elm and UNIX mail on Central UNIX will not be available
POP Server Any pop client (Netscape, Eudora, etc.) pointing to pop.calpoly.edu will be refused.
SMTP Mail Server Any mail client sending mail via smtp.calpoly.edu or mail.calpoly.edu will be refused.
Central UNIX user login sessions Users will not be able to connect to cymbal, flute, harp, trumpet, tuba, or violin.
Xterminals Xterminals which are served via the Central UNIX cluster will be down.

What are the Expected Outcomes of this Service Interruption?

All users will be logging into the new session server, "polylog1", after the service interruption. Any user connected to any of the old AIX cluster machines (cymbal, flute, harp, trumpet, tuba, or violin) will be rerouted to the new system. Prior to this migration, all user "dot" files (i.e., files within your account such as .login, .cshrc, and .profile) will be updated by an automatic process. More information on this process will be available in late August via the system news.

Users still needing access to the old hardware platform will be able to access one AIX machine under the name "rodin" after the migration. All current AIX compilers and libraries should remain available on that machine until the end of Fall Quarter 1997.

Departmental library users will not be able to use Access Control Lists for non-web information after this date. Standard UNIX permissions and groups must be used after the migration as outlined in the recent departmental librarian meeting.

All departmental web files will remain on the AIX machine "oboe" until its migration which is unscheduled at this time.  Until "oboe" is removed, Access Control Lists will continue to work for departmental Web information.

Movement of the departmental library home filesystem to the mail server should result in a decrease in errors associated with system aliases.
