Starting time of service interruption: 8:00 AM
Ending time of service interruption: 5:00 PM
The Mail Service Machine will be upgraded to increase its throughput. Specifically it is scheduled to have both hardware and software upgrades applied. These upgrades include
- HP-UX 10.10 to HP-UX 10.20 which includes
- Sendmail 8.x
- 64 bit application addressing support
- Support for 100BaseT Ethernet Adapters
- Installation of 100BaseT Adapters
- Replace 2 PA-7200 processors with PA-8000 processors (roughly a 2.4 fold performance increase in CPU power).
Because of these upgrades, and the down time required to perform them, Mail Services will be moved to a temporary site for several weeks.
All users who use mail or POPmail will be affected.
The following services will be unavailable:
- All mail reading from the incoming mail box (INBOX) will be unavailable. You can access saved mail in other folders.
- Sendmail will be down (that is the service that sends and receives mail on the Mail Service Machine).
- The POP server will be unavailable (this is the service that Netscape and Eudora users use to retrieve their mail from the system).
- The SMTP server will be unavailable (this is the service that Netscape and Eudora users use to send their mail to other addresses).
Revised by: George Westlund (gwestlun@calpoly.edu)There should be no lost mail as a result of this outage! However, incoming mail will be delayed on Sunday, March 2. A new machine name may show up as part of the local address.
Mail which cannot be delivered from other systems during the service interruption period will be queued by the sending machine. Most machines queue their outgoing mail for at least three days, trying every half-hour or so to deliver to the target address. If the target address remains unavailable for longer than this time period, mail is then bounced back to the sending user (not likely during this outage because of its limited duration). Some machines also send a warning message to the sender indicating that the mail is delayed and that the sending system will continue trying until its maximum waiting period is over.
Users may notice a new machine name as part of the local address. There is no need to worry about this name as it is temporary and several measures are being taken to make sure that all cluster mail is delivered correctly. The official mail address for the cluster is "polymail.calpoly.edu", which will continue to work during this time period.
