Pine upgraded from version 3.96 to 4.03 Central UNIX pine has been upgraded from 3.96 to 4.03 as a result of a software security alert. What is the Reason for this Upgrade? Cal Poly received several software security alerts that identified Pine, among several email software products, as being susceptible to a known security problem. The problem, when exploited, would allow another user to execute commands under the recipients login ID. As a result of this security problem, it was deemed necessary to upgrade to the latest version of pine which contains code that prevents the exploit from happening. Who is Affected by this Upgrade? All pine users will see a difference in the pine interface with this new version. Details of the changes can be found at http://www.washington.edu/pine/changes.html. General Information on pine can be found at http://www.washington.edu/pine/ and the Cal Poly User Guide for pine can be found at http://www.calpoly.edu/~ias/userguides/CentralUNIX/ along with several other user guides targeted at Central UNIX users. What Services will be Affected and How? Along with pine, pico and pilot were also upgraded with no significant changes noted. No other services are affected by this upgrade. What is the Expected Outcome of this Upgrade? Some of the more notable changes in this new version are: o Several command character changes in the new release of pine. Some users will find these confusing at first, but most old command characters still function with the exception of the print command character. O Basic HTML interpretation within a mail message. O Messages which are attached to other messages as a MIME attachment can now be viewed, forwarded, replied to, etc.. o Pine 4.03 requires about 1 MegaByte more memory than version 3.96. As a result, users may see a performance degradation when large numbers of users are using pine. Pine will continue to remain supported until the migration of OpenMail is complete. Its status after that point has yet to be determined. Please report any problems with this new version via email to bugs@polymail.calpoly.edu or call the Help Desk at 756-7000.
