This is an update on several events that have happened during the first two weeks of Winter quarter and what will be happening during the upcoming weeks. MAIL: Mail is still being processed by the PS/2s and zeus. There will be an attempt to move the mail onto the RISC/6000s during scheduled downtime on Sunday, January 18th, 1992 from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Barring complications, the user's ".newmail" files will be moved to "/usr/spool/mail" on the RISC/6000 site named "oboe". Users who are still getting mail addressed to "nike.calpoly.edu" will have their mail delivered properly. However, the default mailer address is going to be changed when mail moves to "oboe.calpoly.edu". Users who have sent out messages or given others "tuba" as their address should still function without any problems. As part of this task, we will be applying quotas to users on the mail filesystem. These quotas will be established to encourage users to clear their incoming system mail box on a regular basis. Based on a pass of the system and examining ".newmail" files, we have determined that the average user with a ".newmail" file is using about 20 K bytes. Mail quotas will be established as follows: Soft Quota Hard Quota Student accounts: 50 K bytes 150 K bytes non-Student accounts: 200 K bytes 600 K bytes NOTE: This is not to be treated as extension to your quota within your account. These quotas are designed to provide sufficient space to prevent loss of mail during extended periods such as quarter breaks. Users who find themselves going over the soft quota for mail on a regular basis will be granted quota increases when the space requirements meet the academic goals of the University. Users who are using mail that does not meet these academic goals and find themselves going over soft quota will be encouraged to use mail filters and other methods to move incoming mail to files within their own account. With the six day grace period for going over soft quota and mail being deferred for up to three days after that point, a user could go over soft quota and still not lose any mail. ACCOUNTS: All Cal Poly students may now add their own accounts to the system, one account per user. A handout is available from ACS on this process. As of this point, approximately two thirds of the accounts added to the system this quarter have been added by this process. Several of the problems encountered during the first week of the quarter with this process have been resolved and we are now looking at the problem where the user's terminal seems to hang after asking all of the pertinent information. Have them call 756-5512 to report the problem. Please encourage these users to disconnect their terminal when this happens rather than leave it connected. One of the other common problems involves the user entering a zip code of five digits when they completed the forms for student records with nine digits (zip plus four). "new" requires the user to enter the same amount of information as is on file with student records. ADA IBM Ada is installed on the RISC/6000 systems. Alsys Ada is being renamed to "aada". The name change took place at 12:00 PM (Noon) on 1/4/92. Since that time the command "ada" invokes the IBM ada compiler and the command "aada" will invoke the Alsys AdaWorld environment. Please be careful to use the command "aada" while working with Alsys Ada as using the command "ada" (IBM's Ada) may corrupt your Alsys library and require you to delete and rebuild it.
