During the upcoming weeks, Information Systems will be migrating several of the most heavily used AIX-PS/2 sites and their users to the AIX/370 site, "zeus". This is being done to prepare for the transition to AIX/ESA and IBM RISC/6000 AIX systems which will ultimately replace the PS/2s. As each site is moved, all user file systems from a site will be combined onto a single large file system on AIX/370. Because of this, symbolic links to these files may become destroyed. If you are not using symbolic links, this will not effect you. For ease of transition, the network name servers will have aliases set for each of the machines which are decommissioned such that if a user tries to connect to them, they will be connected to "zeus" instead. The sites that are targeted for the first phase of the migration plan are ares, athena, demeter, eros, hermes, hypnos, and morpheus. These systems will be migrated one or two at a time with a week or more between each stage. The remaining sites (eos, hebe, iris, nemesis, nike, nyx, and pan), will not be moved until much later. Users must log into their home PS/2 site until they are migrated or are using software which has been approved for use on "zeus". As we migrate each site, we will announce the target date for the migration so users with symbolic links may make whatever preparations they deem necessary to protect their links to the target files. After migration has been completed for each site, migrated users should log into the network connection named "poseidon" (not "zeus"). During the migration process, nameservice aliases will be used to make sure that former PS/2 users who have been migrated are directed to the proper connection. Once the first seven PS/2s are moved, we will begin the installation of the RISC/6000 systems and the new AIX/ESA operating system on the IBM 370 System. Users will then be migrated to the new RISC/6000 Systems. Accounts and passwords will be maintained throughout the process using NFS and Yellowpages. User files will not be affected. Eventually, all users will log onto the RISC/6000 sites for the vast majority of their processing needs within the AIX system. Questions on this process may be directed to the "bugs" account. Further information on the new RISC/6000 systems will be forthcoming.
