Virus Warnings and Other Hoax Chain Letters Recently there has been a rash of virus warning hoaxes and other hoax chain letters. They encourage you to send the message on to all of your friends. These messages prey on your fear, greed, or compassion to get you to send them on to others and perpetuate the chain. But all chain letters are a violation of University Computing policies. These policies can be found at: http://www.calpoly.edu/computing/computing.policies.html If you receive a message asking you to forward it on, be it a virus warning, a way of saving money or earning money, or a plea to help someone in need, check with the resources listed below to verify if it is a hoax. If you cannot find it listed at one of these resources, and it appears to be a virus hoax, forward it to pclan@calpoly.edu They will research the problem and publish information on real virus threats. If the message looks like some form of a chain letter, instead of a virus hoax, please forward it to complaints@polymail.cpunix.calpoly.edu The PCLAN support group has a web page about viruses at http://www.pclan.calpoly.edu/virus.htm Additional information on hoaxes can be found at the CIAC Hoax page: http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/CIACHoaxes.html which is a link from the CIAC page at http://ciac.llnl.gov/ Another hoax resource is located at http://www.kumite.com/myths/ Remember: DO NOT send a hoax or any other chain letter, even one about a REAL virus, on to your friends or other users! If a user receives such a message from you and complains to complaints@polymail.calpoly.edu or abuse@calpoly.edu, you will receive a warning not to do so again and a record will be kept of the incident in the event that it repeats.
