CHANGES HAVE BEEN MADE TO THE NAMES OF THE Information Systems AIX UNIX CLUSTER (oboe, trumpet, cymbal, etc.) Information Systems has received several calls from users concerned about how this change will effect them. This change has been implemented so that THE MAJORITY OF USERS ON THESE SYSTEMS WILL NOT NOTICE ANY CHANGES. FOR EXAMPLE, if John Smith had his account on trumpet and sent an email message, his return address will now be jsmith@oboe.aix.calpoly.edu. However, EMAIL ADDRESSED TO jsmith@oboe.calpoly.edu WILL STILL REACH HIM. JOHN SMITH DOES NOT NEED TO TELL ANYONE THAT HIS EMAIL ADDRESS IS DIFFERENT. The default email address for a user in this cluster is "user_id@oboe.calpoly.edu" where "user_id" is login ID of the user. It is preferred that users use this machine address instead of their home site machine address. The site "oboe" handles all incoming mail for the cluster regardless of the AIX cluster machine specified in the address. THE REASON for this change is to facilitate the management of the network address mapping required for Internet resources at Cal Poly. Network Administration requested the name change in order for the AIX Cluster to comply with the standard hierarchical Domain Name Service structure implemented at Cal Poly. This structure is required to manage the growing number of Internet resources at Cal Poly. If you have any problems with Internet access (especially mail) please contact Academic Computing Service 756-2516 (Building 14 Room 115). ######################################################################## # Following is a more detailed explanation of the changes for those interested. The fully qualified names have been changed from: sitename.calpoly.edu (e.g., trumpet.calpoly.edu) to: sitename.aix.calpoly.edu (e.g., trumpet.aix.calpoly.edu) aliased to: sitename.calpoly.edu (e.g., trumpet.calpoly.edu) These sites, like all sites at Cal Poly, have been "aliased" to "sitename.calpoly.edu". This means that people accessing these sites using Internet services (e.g., telnet, ftp, email) still only need to know sitename.calpoly.edu. This is why the majority of users on these sites will NOT be affected by this change. A KNOWN PROBLEM is with users that have subscribed to automated mailing lists. Mail will still be sent to the user but any add, change, or delete requests to the list by the user may be rejected because the sitename is now different. This same problem occurred when the site names were changed from the Greek god names to instruments. Information Systems is working on a way to solve this problem. This change has been implemented at the request of Network Administration. Management of the network address mapping required for all Internet accessible resources at Cal Poly is growing rapidly. Network Administration is taking advantage of the built-in hierarchical structure of Domain Name Services to administer the 1750 resources currently using Internet communications at Cal Poly. By implementing a hierarchical structure now and "hiding" that structure through aliases, Cal Poly is able to accomplish two things: (1) provide an easy method of access to Cal Poly resources, and (2) preparing for the day when the Cal Poly Internet environment will be too large to "hide" from the rest of the Internet world. By then other methods of providing easy access to Cal Poly resources, such as email hubs, etc., will be implemented. If you have any questions regarding Domain Name Services for network address mapping at Cal Poly please call Network Administration 756-1295.
