MAIL MESSAGES WITH THE SUBJECT "DON'T DELETE THIS MESSAGE -- FOLDER INTERNAL DATA" (UPDATED) Many users who use pine sometime and other email programs at other times (pop, elm, mailx) are noticing a message in their INBOX, and sometimes other folders, with the subject "DON'T DELETE THIS MESSAGE -- FOLDER INTERNAL DATA" from the "MAILER-DAEMON". This message reappears every time they use pine and then use a different email program to view the same folder. This message is generated by pine 4.xx and should be ignored. Deleting it results in loss of information that shows which messages in that folder have been answered via pine or flagged for other reasons (important, deleted, but not expunged, etc.). The message itself is small, using only about 500 bytes of disk space. (Users who use only pine will not see the message since pine uses it to store internal information about the folder and does not display it.) Users who do NOT care about the flags that pine uses to show message status (ansered, important, deleted, etc.) may change a pine configuration option to prevent further creation of these messages. In that case, follow these steps: 1. Login to your Central UNIX account via a telnet program. 2. Start the pine program at the system prompt (%) by typing "pine" followed by a . 3. At the main menu, type an "s" for setup (DO NOT press ). 4. At the setup sub-menu, type an "c" for config (DO NOT press ). 5. Within the setup/config menu type a "w" to search for the desired setting (DO NOT press ). 6. At the "Word to find :" prompt, type "internal-msg" followed by a 7. While the phrase "quell-folder-internal-msg" is selected, press "x" to set this option (DO NOT press ; an "X" will appear between the square braces). 8. Press "e" to exit setup (DO NOT press ). 9. At the "Commit changes ("Yes" replaces settings, "No" abandons changes)?" prompt, enter a "y" (DO NOT press ). You should see a message "[Configuration changes saved]" appear at the bottom of the pine main menu. 10. Type a "q" to quit pine (DO NOT press ). 11. At the "Really quit pine?" prompt, type "y" (DO NOT press ). 12. At the systemp prompt (%), type "exit" followed by a to log out of Central UNIX. This setting can be reversed, at any time, by repeating the above procedure.
