Checking Mail with POP Clients (Netscape, Eudora, etc.) If you are using a POP email client to check your mail (Netscape, Eudora, or some other POP client), set your interval for checking mail to 15 minutes (see below for instructions on checking your settings). Checking your mail more often than 15 minutes can cause an excessive load on the mail server, which is processing between 60,000 and 200,000 messages per day. Users who are found checking their mail more frequently may have their Central UNIX account frozen for system abuse, because of the load that the multiple requests place on the mail server. Also users should not leave POP clients running while they are not using their systems. Such unattended checks waste system resources needlessly. Only check you mail when you are at your workstation and ready to read/respond to it. To set the checking interval value in Netscape, go to the "Options" pull- down menu, select "Mail and News Preferences..". Then go to the "Servers" Tab and set "Check for Mail every" to 15 for 15 minutes. Look for a similar setting if you are using a different POP mail client (such as Eudora).
