AIX Mail Performance Until the migration of Mail from AIX to HP-UX is complete, we will see a bottleneck in performance on the AIX system "oboe" as the amount of mail traffic increases. During this time period mail volume will continue to be a problem on "oboe". If you do not receive a response to a message, DO NOT send another, the first is just delayed. Sending additional copies will only make the problem worse. We are currently seeing delays of between 12 and 24 hours in mail delivery depending on the backlog of messages. These delays could get worse before the migration is completed. Users are asked to keep their mail limited to that which is required for class communications, peer-to-peer communications (one to one), and in keeping with the Mail policies. DO NOT reply to all users when responding to a message unless your response needs to go to all users. Never respond with frivolous answers and don't mail messages to "test" the system. Users observing misuse of the mail resources are strongly encouraged to forward these messages as a complaint to the AIX address "complaints". Misuse would include, but not be limited to, use of Cal Poly computing resources for personal gain, chain letters (any message asking you to pass it on), and the use of system aliases for non-class, non-club or non-departmental business (jokes, as an example, would be a misuse of a system alias). Users found to be in violation of these computing policies will have their accounts frozen without any further warning. For a more complete statement of mail policies, run the "policy" command from the UNIX prompt. Then select "AIX System Policies" and then "Mail Policies".
