During Winter quarter break, all AIX accounts users should be moved to the RISC/System 6000 sites. All programming (ada, FORTRAN, C, Pascal), mail, and most other functions should be done when logged in to your RISC/6000 account. In order to improve the student's working environment, Academic Computing Services recommends that faculty start using the 6000's whenever possible during the Winter term to become familiar with the use of C, FORTRAN, Pascal, and ada Compilers on the RISC/System 6000 sites. We recommend testing of current assignments before the beginning of Winter Quarter. Academic Computing Services will be producing quick reference sheets for the XL compilers as well as the IBM ada compiler within the next week. Man pages are also available on-line for these compilers. Down times and site moves are planned for Winter quarter break starting at 5:00 PM on Tuesday December 15 through Friday December 18. The AIX/370 systems (zeus and all of the PS/2s) will be down Monday December 28 through Wednesday December 30 for Operating System upgrades. All available compilers have been installed on each of the RISC/System 6000 sites. The compilers names and their commands are as follows: XL C Compiler xlc Defaults to ANSI C cc Defaults to extended C c89 Defaults to ANSI C XL FORTRAN Compiler xlf or f77 XL FORTRAN is a full implementation of the ANSI standard for FORTRAN 77 (ANSI X3.9-1978) with selected VS FORTRAN, RT PC VS FORTRAN, RT PC FORTRAN 77 extensions, and industry extensions, with selected Fortran 90 features (ISO/IEC 1539:1991 and ANSI Fortran 90 draft). XL Pascal Compiler xlp IBM ADA Compiler ada Compile and link in the same manner as cc. ALSYS ADA Environment aada (Formerly ada on AIX/370 and RISC/6000 systems up until 12/15. May be limited to the current three RISC/6000 sites.) Academic Computing Services and the System Support Group will be stepping up their efforts to convert existing applications over to the 6000's. If you know of any applications which may need to be ported, please send e-mail to suggestions@nike.calpoly.edu.
