Announcing the AIXMENU System Information Technology Services (ITS) is pleased to announce the availability of the AIXMENU System. This development is based on a large user demand for an interface to the UNIX system for those users whose interest is computing as a tool rather than a profession. Users are invited to try out this interface and provide feedback on its design. To try out the AIXMENU System, enter the command aixmenu at the system prompt. The AIXMENU System allows the user to use commonly used system utilities without having to know their names or where to find them. It provides access to these commonly used commands and environments via a special version of the "lynx" web browser as the menu interface. As a result, the menus are written in the Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) which makes them easy to write and modify. It also means that a user knowledgeable in html can customize their own menus. Additional information on AIXMENU and lynx is available in the publication "Introduction to UNIX" available in the El Corral Bookstore after the first day of classes. The use of the AIXMENU System as your login environment requires installation of the latest dot files within your account (see sysnews article "New_Dot_Files" regarding instructions for installing the latest dot files). Initially the AIXMENU system will not start automatically on login. To change this, perform the following steps: 1. Log in to your account. 2. Run the AIXMENU System manually by entering the command aixmenu at the system prompt. 3. Select the menu item "Setting and viewing the menu environment" by moving the highlight bar to that items with the arrow keys, then press return or the right arrow key. 4. Select the item "Start AIXMENU at Login" by moving to it with your down arrow key, then pressing enter or the right arrow key. 5. It will present you with a menu that allows you to turn on and shut off the menu system. Select the appropriate menu item number and enter it as per the instructions on the screen. NOTE: This command checks the dot files for being current before presenting the menu and may ask you to update your dot files if it feels they are not up to date. The final stages of the on-line help for aixmenu are under development and should be completed on the major items by the start of Fall Quarter. Any further questions should be directed to the "bugs" account by email.
