New Dot Files For Both AIX and HP-UX Systems Coming Dot files are files in your Central UNIX account that define the environment that you operate in. As we change from AIX to HP-UX, these files must be modified. A new set of dot files is now available that will work for both AIX and HP-UX systems that comprise Central UNIX. These dot files are necessary for those who will be working on the new HP-UX systems before the session server replaces the AIX systems, as well as for on-going work once the HP-UX session server is serving all users. There are two ways to obtain the new dot files: 1. Log in to your Central UNIX account (used to be the AIX system) and run the command: % new.dots Follow the prompts as it finds differences between the new files and your old ones. You will now be ready to log into the new HP Session server when it is available. 2. Wait until August 28, 1997 and your dot files will be updated automatically unless you specifically do not want them (see below). The update will occur during the evening of the 28th. Your old dot files will be copied to a subdirectory in your account named old_dot_files and you will receive a mail message informing you of the change. If you do not want ITS to install the new versions of the dot files, place a file named "skipme" in your home directory before August 28, 1997. In that case, you will be responsible for customizing your own dot files for compatibility with HP-UX. Users who wish to modify their own dot files are welcome to look over the new dot files which are located in /usr/local/skel on AIX and /usr/local/share/skel on HP-UX. ITS is not responsible for any problems encountered using stale or user-written dot files. The new dot files contain several new features such as Operating System dependent included files that update such items as paths, manpaths, and other system-dependent functions. The current means of customizing dot files through the use of the .cprcrc file and the addition of user-created .login.mine, .cshrc.mine, and .profile.mine has been maintained in these new versions.
