July 9 through 11, 1999 General description of service interruption Starting time of service interruption: July 9, 5:00 PM Ending time of service interruption: July 11, 12 Noon What is the Reason for this Service Interruption? Migration of student OpenMail (OpenMail2) server to a different server. Who is Affected by this Service Interruption? All mail users will be affected. What Services will be Affected and How? OpenMail2 (student OpenMail) will be unavailable from 5 PM July 9 through 12 Noon July 11; OpenMail1 (faculty/staff) will be available throughout this period, except for normal Sunday maintenance. Central UNIX Mail will be available with restrictions throughout the outage (see below). Service How Users will be affected OpenMail and OpenTime OpenMail2 (students) will be unavailable for the duration of the outage. OpenMail1 (faculty/staff) and OpenTime will be unavailable from 6am to 12 Noon on Sunday, July 11. During the rest of the outage (5 PM July 9 through 6am July 11): All incoming mail from outside Central UNIX and OpenMail will be delayed until after 12 Noon on July 11. If you use Netscape or any other IMAP or POP client to connect to OpenMail1 (faculty/staff), you will be able to read mail but you will not be able to send mail. If you use the OMGUI client to connect to OpenMail1 (faculty/staff), o mail to other OpenMail1 addresses will be delivered. o mail sent to OpenMail2 or Central UNIX addresses will be delayed until after 12 Noon on July 11. o mail sent to other addresses will be delivered. World Wide Web There will be brief intermittent outages where users will not be able to access the Cal Poly home page or any other pages housed on Central UNIX (www.calpoly.edu). Gopher Gopher will be available on Central UNIX (gopher.calpoly.edu). UNIX Mail PINE, Elm and UNIX mail on Central UNIX will be available through out the outage. All incoming mail from outside Central UNIX will be delayed until after 12 Noon on July 11. Mail sent to other Central UNIX and OpenMail users will be delayed until after 12 Noon on July 11. Mail to other addresses will be delivered. POP Server Any pop client (Netscape, Eudora, etc.) pointing to pop.calpoly.edu will fail to connect. SMTP Mail Server Any mail client sending mail via smtp.calpoly.edu or mail.calpoly.edu will fail to connect. Central UNIX user login Users will be able to connect to sessions polylog1 or rodin. What is the Expected Outcome of this Service Interruption? Improved OpenMail2 performance and increased capacity.
