General description of service interruption

        Starting time of service interruption: June 18, 5:00 PM
        Ending time of service interruption: June 20, 12 Noon

What is the Reason for this Service Interruption?

        The on-going disk replacement on Central UNIX (moving to a new,
        larger EMC storage system), together with normal end-of-quarter
        data archiving, will necessitate this downtime at the end of
        quarter break.

Who is Affected by this Service Interruption?

        All users are affected. Faculty and staff preparing for Summer
        Quarter need to take this downtime into account in their
        planning.

What Services will be Affected and How?

        All Central UNIX services (email, Web, OpenTime, compilers,
        etc.) will be unavailable from 5 PM June 18 through 12 Noon June
        20; OpenMail1 (faculty and staff) and OpenTime will be
        unavailable from 6am to 12 Noon on Sunday, June 20.

	Service                     How Users will be affected
	OpenMail and OpenTime       OpenMail2 (students) will be
                                    unavailable for the duration of the
                                    outage.  OpenMail1 and OpenTime
                                    will be unavailable from 6am to 12
                                    Noon on Sunday, June 20.
                                    
                                    During the rest of the outage (5 PM
                                    June 18 through 6am June 20)
                                    
                                    o       Mail sent to other
                                        OpenMail1 users using an OMGUI
                                        client will be delivered.
                                    o       Mail sent to OpenMail2 and
                                        Central UNIX users using an OMGUI
                                        client will be delayed until after
                                        12 Noon on June 20.
                                    o       Mail sent to other Internet
                                        addresses using an OMGUI client
                                        will be delivered.
                                    o       Mail sent using Netscape or
                                        any other IMAP or POP client for
                                        OpenMail will fail to connect.
                                    
                                    In addition:
                                    
                                    o       Other mail to
                                        alias@calpoly.edu or mail to
                                        loginID@polymail.calpoly.edu will
                                        be delayed.
                                    o       Mail to all other addresses
                                        will be delivered.
	World Wide Web              Users will not be able to access
                                    the Cal Poly home page or any other
                                    pages housed on Central UNIX
                                    (www.calpoly.edu).
	Gopher                      Users will not be able to access
                                    any gopher pages housed on Central
                                    UNIX (gopher.calpoly.edu).
	UNIX Mail                   PINE, Elm and UNIX mail on Central
                                    UNIX will not be available
	POP Server                  Any pop client (Netscape, Eudora,
                                    etc.) pointing to pop.calpoly.edu
                                    will fail to connect.
	SMTP Mail Server            Any mail client sending mail via
                                    smtp.calpoly.edu or
                                    mail.calpoly.edu will fail to
                                    connect.
	Central UNIX user login     Users will not be able to connect
        sessions                    to polylog1 or rodin.
	Xterminals                  Xterminals which are served via the
                                    Central UNIX cluster will be down.
	Modem Authentication        Modem users will experience a delay
                                    on Sunday, June 20, from 6am
                                    through 12 Noon of two minutes
                                    while authenticating.
	ITS Help/Action Remedy      The Action Remedy system will be
                                    unavailable on Sunday, June 20,
                                    from 6am through 12 Noon.

What is the Expected Outcome of this Service Interruption?

        Ongoing consolidation of disk storage for Central UNIX.
