Friday December 26, 1997 Electrical "Feeder" Outage Affecting the Entire Campus except the Computer Center (Building 14). Starting time of service interruption: Sunrise Ending time of service interruption: Sunset What is the Reason for this Service Interruption? Power to the entire campus is being cut by P.G.&E. Work is being performed during daylight hours. NOTE: If work cannot be completed on Friday, December 26, 1997, P.G.&E. is reserving the right to also use daylight hours on Saturday, December 27 and Sunday, December 28, 1997. Users can check on the work in progress on Friday afternoon by calling the Utilidor recorded message at 756-6808 as the requirements of the outage change. Who is Affected by this Service Interruption? If all goes according to plan, Cal Poly Modem Pools, Computer Center computer systems (Central UNIX and the mainframe), and access to the Internet should remain up. However, there is a possibility that there could be a service interruption as described below. What Services will be Affected and How? All buildings with the exception of the Computer Center and those noted on the Utilidor outage pages (http://www.facsrv.calpoly.edu/utilidor/) will be without power for this time period. The Computer Center will be switched to a generator for the duration of the outage and switched back after the outage. During the switching to and from the generator, the Computer Center systems will be powered by a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) system which should allow the systems to remain up without interruption. The Cal Poly modem pools and access to the Internet should also remain up during this time period. ONLY IF THERE IS AN UNANTICIPATED PROBLEM will Computer Center services be interrupted. If the time taken to switch to and from the generator exceeds the limitations of the UPS, there is a potential for an outage of long enough duration to bring the systems down and bring them back up once power is restored. In that case there could be an interruption of the following services including, but not limited to Service How Users will be affected OpenMail and OpenTime OpenMail and OpenTime may be unavailable. The Web interface for OpenMail may also be unavailable. All incoming mail from outside OpenMail will be delayed for the duration of the outage. World Wide Web Users may not see pages housed on the Cal Poly central web server (www.calpoly.edu) or links to pages that are referred to off of the central web server. Gopher Users may not be able to access documents on the Cal Poly gopher server. This includes pages referred to by other gopher and web servers. UNIX Mail PINE, Elm and UNIX mail on Central UNIX may not be available POP Server Any pop client (Netscape, Eudora, etc.) pointing to pop.calpoly.edu will fail to connect. SMTP Mail Server Any mail client sending mail via smtp.calpoly.edu or mail.calpoly.edu may fail to connect. Central UNIX user login Users may not be able to connect to sessions polylog1 or rodin. NOTE: cymbal, flute, harp, trumpet, tuba, and violin all point to polylog1. NOTE: NEVER use "monet" as a site to log into. Logging into it may result in none of your files being available. Xterminals Xterminals which are served via the Central UNIX cluster will be down. What is the Expected Outcome of this Service Interruption? This service interruption is required by P.G.&E..
