Introduction

Cal Poly and Hewlett-Packard are entering into a contract to replace the current Cal Poly AIX-UNIX system with a system composed of HP K420 Servers. The intent is to provide a more robust environment and services which, up until now, have been limited or unavailable.

The new cluster, upon completion, would be composed of six HP K420 systems as shown in "The Basic System Design". Each of the systems would fill one or more specialized functions. The General Session server would cope only with interactive user requests, the fileserver only with serving files to the other sites, etc..

This design, combined with the processor expandability of the K Series Servers from HP, should provide Cal Poly with a growth path in the coming years. As machines become more utilized, additional CPU's and/or higher density memory can be added. If the machines reach their capacity and cannot be upgraded internally, then they can be traded or additional machines can be procured to split out functions from a multi-function machine.
