The filesystem migration was completed on Saturday morning, March 29, with the following results:

• All user filesystems were migrated off of the AIX cluster. This means:
  
  • Your files are no longer located on your AIX home site, they are located on the HP-UX Service Guard™ Sites "polysrv1" and "polysrv2". As a result, accessing your files may seem slightly slower than it did before the migration when your files were usually on the machine you logged into.
  • You may new log into any of the AIX systems, except "oboe", while they remain in service. You are no longer restricted to your "home" site. You now have the opportunity to pick the least busy site for your work.
  • Some users may notice they have different home sites than before the migration. This is not important and you need not worry about where your files are located and where you've logged in.
  • Your login path has been changed to reflect the new path to the combined filesystems on the HP-UX servers. Note that all of the old paths are still in existence as symbolic links for the immediate future. Users should modify any file paths they have used in the past and use the new paths. There is a table available showing the correspondence between the old and new filesystems.
  • All Access Control Lists on the migrated user filesystems no longer exist and cannot be recreated (they are not supported under HP-UX 10.x with NFS). Departmental Libraries continue to have ACLs available to them until they too are migrated to one of the HP-UX systems (See "NOTE" below).
  • All users were migrated with the default quotas for their group if they had a default quota prior to the migration.

    NOTE: The "/ulib" and "/u22" filesystems have not been migrated yet. They are still located on their respective AIX sites "flute" and "oboe". They will be migrated at a later date to systems which are appropriate to their use.

• Quota Problems: Users who had extended quotas were transferred with a zero quota and are to be reset manually. During the manual quota setting process, the quota checking function was on unknown to the systems admins performing the quota settings. This was due to a bug in the command that turns quotas off. As a result, all users who had not yet had their quotas set after the quota function started, will have lost the contents of any files that were written during this time period.

  If your account had its quota set incorrectly, and you logged in on Saturday through Monday at 9:30 AM and edited any of your files, you will have lost the contents of these files. This includes mail folders, saved files, program resource control files (.pinerc), edited files, etc..

  Also, any mail that would have been passed through a mail "filter" (the elm mail filter) and saved within the account would have been lost or bounced back to the sender with an obscure message. This again is a fall out of the quota problem.

  NOTE: If you experienced a loss of data due to the quota problem and wish to recover the file(s), please come to the Help Desk office in CSc 14-114 and complete the File Recovery Form. The corrupted files will be restored as soon as possible.

• NFS Mounts became unstable shortly after the migration crew had finished their efforts on Saturday. This resulted in the Service Guard™ packages "polysrv1" and "polysrv2" failing over multiple times to their respective secondary machines. As of noon on March 31, 1997, this seems to have been brought under control.

  Mail received during periods of NFS instability that would normally have been forwarded on or filtered was delivered into the user's incoming mail folder (INBOX) instead.

 ITS staff members are taking the following actions to remedy the situations listed above:

• Until HP fixes the quota command bug and we have set all user quotas to appropriate values based on their original AIX settings, quotas will remain turned off. Users are cautioned during this period to be aware of the amount of disk space they are using; once quotas are turned back on, users may find that they have exceeded their default quota. When quotas are turned back on, users will experience NFS error messages and possible corruption of files if they have exceeded their quotas.
  
• The Service Guard™ fail-over of fileserver packages is being addressed with Hewlett-Packard. This seems to be a performance related issue on the system that the package is running on. We have moved the packages to the appropriate server platforms and feel that the situation has stabilized.
  
• Lost files caused by the quota problems will be recovered for user by ITS. In order to have a file recovered, please come into the Help Desk in CSc 14-114 and fill out a File Recovery Request Form. The files will be restored as soon as possible.

ITS wishes to thank the users for their patience in this matter as we continue the migration from AIX to HP-UX.
