All services that previously ran on the HP production mail server has been moved to a temporary mail server. This move was necessary in order to upgrade the production mail server. The move involved migrating mail and user account services to the temporary machine. (See the March 2 service interruption web page for additional information.)
During the move between the machines, no logins were allowed to preserve user mail integrity. The time schedule for this move was to be from 8 AM to 5 PM. Unfortunately, the process took longer than expected due to unforeseen system configuration problems. All user were able to log into their home sites by approximately 8:30 PM.
While integrity of the users mail files was better then the migration from AIX to HP-UX last October, there is still a possibility that some messages may have bounced back to the sender and an even more remote possibility that some message may have been lost. Within seconds of bringing the temporary system up, the mail queue filled with over 34,000 messages.
Once the production machine is upgraded with new processors, faster Ethernet adapters, and a new level of the operating system (HP-UX 10.20), the moved services will be moved back to the production server. Based on the experience gained on March 2nd, the March 16 migration back should go smoother and be far less painful for both systems programmers and users alike. (See the March 16 service interruption web page for additional information.)
NOTE: Addition downtime is planned for the quarter break for user filesystem migration and normal end of quarter archives. (See the March 25-29 service interruption web page for additional information.)
