Here is a machine by machine breakdown of what is going on or planned in the near future.

  • RUBENS - currently the sendmail machine and in 'production' mode. Sendmail is going to be moved off of RUBENS onto MONET so RUBENS can have several upgrades. These upgrades are; upgrade the operating system from 10.10 to version 10.20, install the 100 Base T adapter cards, upgrade the cpu's with the PA8000 cpu's.
  • The sendmail migration is planned to happen on March 2nd. Once we are satisfied with MONET's handling of sendmail*,then we can start upgrading RUBENS. The hardware upgrade is planned for the week of March 14th.

*Although I only mention the migration of sendmail, several other very important applications must be migrated at the same time. For instance, Monet must become the NIS master, TAP (accounting package) must move, and all services provided by RUBENS must be migrated and run on MONET with transparency.

All of these tasks are currently in preparation.

  • RENOIR - the Compute Server machine is currently being used as an Openmail testbed. Openmail was sucessfully installed and tailored on this machine. Openmail will be migrated off of this machine onto DEGAS so RENOIR can be upgraded to the 10.20 operating system and have the 100 Base T lan cards installed. The upgrade of RENOIR is planned for 2/24.
  • DEGAS - Has become the Openmail and Opentime testig system because it has the latest version of the operating system(10.20)and Openmail and Opentime. Openmail and Opentime will stay on this machine until RUBENS has been upgraded and is ready for final production mode.
  • The three machines RUBENS, RENOIR, and DEGAS will also become 'service - guarded' after all of them have been upgraded in hardware and operating systems. This is planned for late February/early March.

  • MONET - the session server, will take over the sendmail and other duties that were performed by RUBENS while RUBENS is being upgraded. The preparation work for this is in progress. Also user applications will begin to be ported to this machine by the IAS group.
  • VANGOGH - System Mgmt server, is being setup to perform system management duties. ORACLE has been installed and Network Node Manager is currently being worked on. There are several other HP system management software packages slated to be installed on this machine.
  • DAVINCI - Fileserver, being setup to take over fileserving from the AIX cluster. This is planned to happen during quarter break, March 26th through March 29th. Also, this machine is having a software problem that HP is working on. The interrupt processes are being overloaded causing a conflict between the lan adaptor and the scsi adaptor. This causes a lan adaptor hang. We thought this was an isolated problem until we service guarded the cluster. Then when the problem occurred, it failed over to VANGOGH and had the same problem there. HP has been very responsive to the problem and has located and simulated the problem at their site. They hope to have a fix soon.
  • MONET, VANGOGH, and DAVINCI have been setup in a service guard fail-over environment.
