Residents may also report problems or requests to the front desk in their respective hall or apartment.

Barbecues

Stationary barbecues are located in the patio area of each South Mountain Hall.

There are five large, portable barbecues that can be checked out for special events. Call the Housing & Business Services office (756-1587) to confirm availability. The large barbecues can be reserved by processing an Event Authorization form through Residential Life & Education. Event Authorization forms may be obtained at your hall or apartment front desk, from your Coordinator of Student Development (CSD), or from the Residential Life & Education office. Please reserve at least five (5) days in advance to allow for scheduling and delivery.

Cable Television

In the residence halls and apartments, cable services are provided to the TV lounges and all residence hall student rooms through an agreement between Housing & Business Services and Charter Communications. In the apartments, there is one cable connection in the living area and one cable connection in each bedroom. Expanded Cable Service is provided to the residents at no additional cost. There is no longer the option for students to subscribe to premium services. The TV Lounges and CSD apartments have "Expanded Basic Cable." This does not include any of the movie channels. Click HERE for Charter Communications Cable Television Channel Listings (opens .pdf file).

Computer Network Connectivity

Each student room has high-speed connection to the Cal Poly data network and the internet. Computers must have a 10/100 Base-T or compatible Ethernet card installed. Please refer to the ResNet New Resident Information page for more information on connecting the the Cal Poly network.

Students must bring their own network cable to connect their computer to the assigned in-room data wall jack.

Custodial Staff

The Housing & Business Services Custodial Staff are the reason Cal Poly residence halls and apartments are clean and well maintained. They are responsible to keep the facilities clean and sanitary for the residents. The custodians are kept busy eight hours a day, five days a week, as well as sixteen hours for the weekend crew. Their duties include scrubbing, vacuuming, sweeping, dusting, shampooing, and other essential tasks that are hard work.

The custodians must work harder and longer when residents do not pick up after themselves. They must clean up excess messes and still complete their regular duties. In situations such as these, charges will be assessed. Spilled popcorn and drinks in hallways and lounges, stacked furniture, or a trashed lounge can be expensive.

Key Services

Housing & Business Services provides all key control and tracking for the residence halls and apartments, including programming of the electronic locks and access cards.

Laundry Services Information

Electronic "debit card" operated washers and dryers are located throughout the University Housing facilities. Each resident will be issued a laundry card during check-in. Dollar value may be added to the card at the "Add Value" stations located in the first floor lobby of each South Mountain Hall, in the main lounge of Sierra Madre and Yosemite Halls and the laundry rooms at Cerro Vista and Poly Canyon Village.

Credit may be added in increments of $5, $10, or $20, up to a total value of $50. Once value is added to the card, it is the same as cash. Refunds will not be made for lost cards or cards that have value remaining when residents checkout. The laundry cards are the property of the University and must be returned upon checkout. There will be a charge for lost or damaged cards.

To operate the laundry machines, insert the card in the washer or dryer card reader and carefully follow the instruction prompts. The value of the wash or dry will automatically be deducted from the laundry card. Notify the front desk staff if a machine malfunction occurs or the card fails. A new card will be issued or a machine repair will be requested.

In the apartments, you may check availability of the washers and dryers with the online Laundry Alert system at http://www.laundryalert,com. Simply enter the password uhcpslo and click on your laundry room for availability information. You may choose to have the system notify you via e-mail or text when a washer or dryer becomes available by clicking on Let Me Know > E-Mail/Text and entering your e-mail or text message address.

The University assumes no responsibility for items left in laundry rooms. Clothing left in machines overnight will be collected and stored as lost and found at the front desk.

media:scape Collaboration Tools in Poly Canyon Village Knowledge Center

media:scape is furniture and technology merged to help students collaborate, share ideas and learn more effectively. Through the integration of furniture and technology, media:scape is reshaping the way students collaborate in a connected world.

media:scape boosts collaboration across the table or across the globe by transforming classrooms, libraries or social spaces, connecting students, and sharing information seamlessly in dynamic new ways.

Most collaborative spaces today support leader-led presentations where information is controlled and shared by one person at a time. media:scape removes these barriers and democratizes how people access and share information by allowing all participants to contribute their ideas equally, quickly and seamlessly.

How it works

media:scape was designed for a “walk-up and connect” experience:

Open the media well and remove a Puck™
Connect the Puck™ to your laptop
Share what's on your laptop by pressing the Puck™

Open. Connect. Share. (opens youtube video)

Recreation Equipment/Supplies

Billiard, foosball, and ping pong tables are provided in the lounges in South Mountain, Sierra Madre and Yosemite Hall, as well as the Cerro Vista and Poly Canyon Village Community buildings for the enjoyment of the residents. Each front desk is equipped with billiard cues and a rack, set of cue balls and tray, chalk; foosball balls; ping-pong paddles and balls; volleyball net and ball; football, basketball, soccer ball; and baseball bats and balls.

New recreational equipment will be delivered to the front desks prior to Fall Quarter opening. Housing & Business Services maintains the tables and equipment; please report any problems or request replacement items through a Service Request procedures outlined above in the Requests for Maintenance and/or Repairs section.

Do not move the billiard tables; the slate will crack if the tables are not moved with extreme caution; the cost to repair is approximately $250. If you need the table moved from its normal location, prepare and submit an Event Authorization form.

Recycling

Housing & Business Services coordinates all recycling efforts for the residence halls and apartments. Recycling bins are located outside of each building for co-mingled aluminum, plastic, glass, and paper. Recycling is good for the environment and helps reduce the amount of trash removed from the campus to our local landfill.

Trash Pickup Schedule

Trash is picked up daily Monday through Saturday after 9:00 a.m.

University Housing is dedicated to providing an enhanced and quality campus experience for those residing on campus.
