This year's regions we are learning: Sinaloa & Veracruz

What we learn

Each region in Mexico has a unique style of dance. Every state in Mexico differs from one another and each state has their own set of costumes and dance styles. Our group studies at least three different regions a year picked by our group's President. The following is a little history of each region we are currently studying and/or we plan on studying in the years to come.

Tamaulipas: is located in the northeastern part of Mexico and borders the Gulf of Mexico. Tamaulipas dance styles were influenced by central-European Polka and also contains Mexican huapango or huasteco styles. In Imagen y Espiritu, mean usually wear a green checkered shir or redt, black jeans, and a hat. The women wear a green checkered dress and a white shirt or it could be a floral dress.

Jalisco: Considered to be the birthplace of mariachi music, Jalisco is a state in Mexico located in the central part of the country. Jalisco's dance style is very unique from different states in Mexico because most of the dances are about courtship or of flirtatious material. Generally, men are dressed in a traditional charro suit with silver studs on the sides, a sombrero, and a big bow. Women wear is a traditional ranch dress with beautiful colored ribbons that are influenced by the native Indians.

Guerrero: is located on the southern part of Mexico and borders the Pacific Ocean. Guerrero's dance styles are composed of cumbias and salsas. Men traditionally wear white shirts and pants, huaraches, and a straw hat. Women also wear a white dressed and are usually embroidered with flowers, huaraches, and wear their hair in a bun.

Nayarit: is located on the central west coast bordering the Pacific Ocean. Originally, the dances from Nayarit are of Moorish for when the Moors conquered Spain. A particular characteristic that makes Nayarit unique in their dance style is the incorporations of machetes (swords). Traditonal costumes for men are composed of a colorful shirt and matching bandana, and white pants. The women dress in a ranch dress with flora print and use a Huichol fan.

Veracruz: is located on the central-eastern part of Mexico. Veracruz dance styles are composed of bambas and huapangos (influenced by flamenco). Men traditionally wear white pants and shirt, a red sash around the waist, and a straw hat. Women wear a white lace dress, a rebozo, their hair up in a bun, and fans.

Sinaloa: is located on the western coast of Mexico. Sinaloa is largely known for its banda music ("band" music which normally includes a large ensemble). Sinaloa's costumes are generally more tropical because of its location. Men and women both wear a type of floral pattern costumes.
