SYNOPSIS: The Short Grass Prairie Stewardship Fund (Fund) supports the conservation and restoration of the short grass prairie ecosystem covering portions of New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Colorado. The Fund emphasizes conservation actions that aid in recovery of imperiled species that depend on this system, especially the Lesser Prairie-Chicken. While proposals will be accepted for work in any of the focal states and for a wide range of conservation actions, in 2012 special consideration will be given to projects in southeastern New Mexico and projects that aim to work with USDA-NRCS field offices to provide technical assistance to farmers, ranchers, and other private landowners. Dedicated funding from NRCS is available for the following specific activities: (a) increase technical assistance capacity to implement NRCS's Landscape Initiatives and contributing Farm Bill programs and NFWF's Keystone Initiatives within identified action areas; and (b) meet the Conservation Reserve Program's (CRP's) technical assistance needs in high sign-up and/or high CRP workload areas. Added capacity provided should be directed toward: Accelerated implementation of NRCS initiatives and Farm Bill programs (such as WHIP, EQIP, and CRP) within action areas; Incorporation of best available science in applying conservation practices and strategically focusing resources where the greatest conservation opportunities exist; Increased landowner awareness and participation in NRCS Farm Bill programs.
