Areas of interest:
Design, International Engineering Education, Control Systems, Dynamic Systems Modeling and Simulation
Brief synopsis of engineering experience:
Ten years of teaching in Mechanical Engineering at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, California. Have taught a wide variety of courses, but focus is on dynamic system analysis and simulation, control systems, and design. Completely renovated Mechanical Control Systems lab to include computer control, simulation, and leading-edge hydraulic and pneumatic motion control systems. Greatly expanded senior Design course include increased contacts with national, California and local industries. Design work on assistive technology projects for the disabled.
Regular participating professor, Automotive Mechatronics, Munich University of Applied Sciences
Two-year teaching assignment at Fachhochschule München (Munich University of Applied Sciences). Taught courses in dynamic systems, control theory, and design in both English and German.
Managed "Project Probe" for American Electric Power Co., a hands-on course for selected engineering seniors at AEP's Gavin Plant, Cheshire, Ohio.
Eight years teaching engineering at Maine Maritime Academy, Castine, Maine. Taught variety of courses in mechanical and marine engineering and engineering technology. Developed three courses for using computers to do engineering analyses. Wrote trim and stability program for T.V. State of Maine, college's 17,000 dwt training vessel. Developed steam plant simulator for training power engineers in steam plant operation and controls.
One year as senior software engineer, Computervision Corporation, Bedford, Massachusetts. Wrote CAD software for HVAC and piping design.
Two years as rotor and bucket engineer for General Electric Co., Medium Steam Turbine Department, Lynn, Massachusetts. Performed rotor dynamics design of steam turbine rotors. Rewrote rotor design software.
One year as structural and software engineer for Advanced Marine Enterprises, Arlington, Virginia. Performed FEA studies of ship structural components. Wrote software for ship hull design.
Two years as design engineer for J. Ray McDermott & Co., Inc., New Orleans, Louisiana. Designed mechanical equipment for offshore oil production facilities. Helped install platform in Bombay High North oilfield in Arabian Sea.
Consulting:
Technical analysis of mechanics for fall protection system for the elderly in pursuit of patent for this system.
Technical support of product development, mechanical analysis of human joint orthoses, and production automation for DeRoyal, Inc., San Luis Obispo, California.
Worked on development/test team for DeltaV process control system at Fisher-Rosemount Systems, Inc., Austin, Texas.
Taught simulator-based training classes for power engineers at Electric Power Research Institute's Simulator and Training Center, Kansas City, Missouri.
Developed high fidelity dynamic simulators for two steam power plants for TRAX Corporation, Forest, Virginia.
Developed training course for Nigerian National Petroleum Company in oil fleet preventive maintenance, repair, and stock management.
Developed software for automatically generating 3-D FEA models of steam turbine blades for Asea Brown Boveri, Baden, Switzerland.
Developed pipe flow training course for engineers at Bath Iron Works, shipbuilder in Bath, Maine.
