Interoperability of enterprise applications and software has been identified as one of the major problems companies are facing to sustain integrated enterprise management in the advent of networked organizations, e-globalization and internet.
Today, in business and industrial domains typical situations can easily be found where companies have to conduct operations embracing several specific and parallel domains requiring the integration of many dedicated models and software. These include for instance applications dealing with administrative management, engineering subjects, suppliers and materials, sub-contractors, etc. Nevertheless, nowadays are available many proposals to represent knowledge, data models and services for the main business and manufacturing activities, including those at meta-level. Some are released with International Standards (e.g., ISO, UN), others are developed at regional or national level (e.g., CEN, DIN), and others are developed by independent project teams and groups (e.g., OMG, W3C, IAI, ebXML).
However, the heterogeneity and the inadequacy to support interoperability of the selected and needed applications, models and services, even when they are standard-based, is preventing and delaying the full integration and consequent interoperability of applications and software. And the scientific community is trying to respond by presenting proposals for methodologies and system’s architectures aimed to contribute solving this problem.
The purpose of this special issue is to explore effective and innovative proposals with focus on architectures and platforms, enterprise modeling, product and process modeling, meta-modeling, ontology, web services, knowledge representation, and any other subject appropriate to support the interoperability of applications and software.
This issue aims to take a look into the future of research, technology and standardisation, identifying the current state of the art in available or emerging technologies, standards and business practices and to contribute for a common understanding in research and developments and the trends to move beyond, contributing for enhanced solutions and envisaging the future.
Original contributions and thoughtful position and case studies papers, from both research and industry, are welcome. Please specify "IJIEM Submission ?Special issue on Interoperability" in the "Subject" of your e-mail message.
